Harry Robert's Story.
Harry was born in Tottenham on 14th April 1913. When he was about two, he went with his parents to live in Hamilton, Ontario. A few years later his father died, and he moved with his mother to Garden City, Long Island, New York to join his mother’s sister and her family.
In 1926 his mother married Captain Jack Chapman of Cunard and they returned to England and lived in Wallasey. Harry became a barrister’s clerk in the Chambers of Ackroyd and Geddes in Cook Street Liverpool. He also served as Chancery Clerk in the court of the County Palatine of Lancaster.
He joined the ‘weekend fliers’ at Ledsham and married Olive Vasey in about 1938. He volunteered in 1939 but despite having a civil licence had insufficient peripheral vision to be a military pilot so he became, navigator, wireless operator and mid upper gunner. He joined 502 Squadron, Coastal Command and served in Iceland - during the Battle of the Atlantic - and in the Middle East and Malta. He was killed on 9th May 1944 over the Bay of Biscay. His son Peter had been born on 16th March 1944.
